How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

Hair extensions have been a part of the fashion industry since the 60’s. Those hair extensions were made of real hair and were more like bumps that sat at either the top or the back of the hair to give lift and length to the hair style.

With the passage of time hair extensions have evolved a lot and have gone through tremendous improvements in application and in its types.

With the growing popularity of hair extensions, there have come up many types of hair extensions that serve different purposes and are also durable because when someone spends their bucks for a purpose, it should serve them for a considerable amount of time.

Let us now learn in details about the types of hair extensions so that you know which suits your purpose the best:

1. Wigs:

We all are familiar with wigs and this is possibly the first thing that pops in our mind when we think of hair extensions.

Wigs are made of either natural hair or synthetic fabrics and are attached to the head with the help of an elastic band that holds tight to the head or they have a net base that sets to the head and the hair without the chance of falling off easily (unless and until someone pulls it hard LOL).

When should you choose wigs?

You can choose wigs when you want an entirely different hairstyle for a particular occasion and do not want to make any changes to your hair.

2. Clip in hair extensions:

Clip in hair extensions

Clip in hair extensions come in thin or thick strands of hair with clips attached to the base that is used to clip on your natural hair.

When to choose clip in hair extensions?

When you do not want anything permanent and want to change your hairstyle regularly, go for clip in hair extensions as you can use and remove them as per your wish and attach them on whichever section of hair you want.

3. Tape in hair extensions:

Tape in hair extensions are the easiest to apply. You just need to tape these extensions using the adhesive weft tape on either side of your natural hair.

When to choose tape in hair extensions?

You can choose tape in hair extensions when you want to put in the least effort and do some maintenance like never brushing while the extensions are on wet hair.

4. Sew in hair extensions:

For this, be prepared to braid your hair in cornrows as these hair extensions are sewn in those braids. Not a very pleasant experience I must tell as having braids for a long time in the head can be discomforting.

When to choose sew in hair extensions?

I am not sure when to choose this type of hair extensions as you need to compromise on brushing your hair, washing and styling too.

5. Microlinks:

Microlink hair extensions

Microlink extensions are tiny wefts of hair that are attached to the roots of your natural hair (by taking small sections of hair at a time). Note that no glue or stitching is done in this process.

When to choose microlink extensions?

As your natural hair grows, microlinks will keep moving away from the scalp and you need to reposition them in a while. Therefore, if you have the money and the wish to maintain your desired look, only then you should go for microlink extensions.

6. Fusion hair extensions:

Fusion hair extensions

These hair extensions are attached to the individual strands of your hair in the roots using a hot glue gun. This gives the most natural and fuller look out of all.

When to choose fusion hair extensions?

You can choose fusion hair extensions if you have the will to put your time behind it’s maintenance because as glue is used in the process you can not use heat on your hair thereafter as applying heat can loosen the extensions and they might come out.

Also, as this type of hair extensions are also attached to the roots, you need to reposition as your hair grows.
