What sets my article different from others is that I am not going to confuse you with a number of options, but only tell you the genuine ones that actually work and have worked for me and my known.

Also, in the very beginning I would like to mention one thing, while doing my research I have seen many sites mentioning honey and lemon as their ingredients of DIY masks for oily and acne prone skin, but in reality honey will make the condition worse as it is highly moisturising and lemon will trigger acne.

1. Fuller’s earth or multani mitti and rose water face mask

Fuller’s earth which is generally called multani mitti is an excellent ingredient for controlling excess sebum production and for controlling acne. Rose water helps to cool the skin and is very refreshing besides working as a sebum controller as well.

How to use it?

  • Take 2 tablespoons of Fuller’s earth and mix with a few drops of rose water. Work it into a thick paste.
  • Apply the mask all over the face and wait for 10 minutes.
  • Wash with normal water.
2. Sandalwood and rose water face mask

Sandalwood and rose water face mask

Sandalwood is also great for controlling sebum production and also as an anti acne treatment. 

How to use it?

  • Take 2 tablespoons of sandalwood powder in a bowl
  • Pot a few drops of rose water to work it into a thick paste
  • Apply it all over the face and neck and wait for 10 minutes
  • Wash off with water
3. Red lentil and turmeric face mask

Red lentil and turmeric face mask for acne

Red lentil works great for controlling acne and turmeric is antibacterial and antimicrobial.

How to use it?

  • Take handful of red lentils and soak it in water overnight
  • Next morning, grind it in the mixer grinder into a thick paste
  • Add a pinch of turmeric into the paste
  • Apply the face pack all over the face and neck
  • Wash off with cold water

Neem and turmeric face mask

Neem has got antifungal and antibacterial properties and so does turmeric. Both the ingredients work great in treating acne.

How to use it?

  • Take a bunch of neem leaves and separate the leaves from the stem as you will need only the neem leaves for this.
  • Now put the neem leaves in the mixer and add water to make it into a paste
  • Add a pinch of turmeric to the mixture and apply all over the face
  • Keep for 15 minutes and then wash off with water
5. Clove paste for active acne

Clove works great as a pain reliever and also has medicinal properties for treating acne.

How to use it?

  • Put a few cloves in the mixer and add water to make a paste
  • Apply the paste only on targeted area and keep overnight 
  • Wash off the next morning

Garlic works great for active acne. All you need to do is just take a clove of garlic and peel it. Cut it into half and press it on the active acne for a few minutes.

7. Tea tree oil and clay face mask

Bentonite clay works well for controlling both sebum and acne and tea tree oil is an age old remedy for acne prevention.

How to use it?

  • Take 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay and add a few drops of tea tree oil in it.
  • In order to dilute the mixture, you can use normal water or rose water both.
  • Apply the mask all over the face and keep for 15 minutes.
  • Wash off with water

Witch Hazel is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and also has astringent properties. Clay will help to control sebima and clear skin.

How to use it?

  • Mix 1 tablespoon fi with hazel and 2 tablespoons of clay
  • You can dilute with water or rose water
  • Apply all over the face and keep for 10 minutes
  • Wash off with water

Tea tree oil and cucumber face mask

Cucumber has a cooling effect that helps to soothe irritated skin and also controls oil. Tea tree oil is the ingredient for preventing acne.

How to use it?

  • Make a paste of cucumber and add a few drops of tea tree oil in it.
  • Apply the paste on your face and keep for 15 minutes
  • Wash off with water
10. Apple cider vinegar and gram flour face mask

Apple cider vinegar and gram flour face mask

Apple cider vinegar is said to kill all the acne causing bacteria and also great for the skin. Gram flour on the other hand helps to exfoliate the skin and clean the pores.

How to use it?

  • Take 2 tablespoons of gram flour and mix it with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
  • You can dilute with water
  • Apply on your face and wait for 10 minutes
  • Wash off with water
11. Activated charcoal and rose water face mask

Activated charcoal works great in cleaning the pore and taking out excess oil from the skin. 

How to use it?

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal with rose water
  • Apply the mask on your face and wait for 10 minutes before washing off.
12. Holy basil and turmeric face mask

Holy basil and turmeric face mask

Holy basil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and helps to kill acne causing germs. Turmeric also does the same job.

How to use it?

  • Make a paste of a few holy basil leaves and add a pinch of turmeric to it.
  • Apply all over the face and keep for 15 minutes and then wash off with water.
How often should you apply face masks/face packs?

No face mask should be applied more than once a week to your face. You can try making 2 different face masks and use them twice a week but not more than that. Your skin needs to heal naturally and retain its own moisture and create its own barrier.
