Does Cold Water Help Curly Hair?

There’s one thing true for sure which I and all of you have been hearing from our parents since childhood and that’s you should always wash your hair with cold water and never with hot water.

But what about people living in the colder regions of the world where pouring cold water on the head seems next to impossible?

Well, for them, lukewarm water will do as well, but never hot water!

Do you know the reason behind why you are asked to wash your hair with cold water?

Forget about your hair, pouring hot water on the head will heat up your head and can cause strokes as well.

Coming to the hair, cold water is a boon because cold water helps to seal the hair cuticles and lock in moisture in the hair as a result of which the hair becomes shiny, lustrous and healthy.

And when its about curly hair, there’s nothing better than cold hair which adds definition to the curl patterns and holds them tight while also making hair look luminous and moisture locked.

Does Cold Water Help Curly Hair

Does cold water make hair less frizzy?

When you have curly hair, frizz is already a part and parcel of your life I am sure. But there’s a little that cold water can do for your frizzes.

Yes, cold water can make your curls less frizzy as cold water does not strip the scalp and the hair of its moisture, thus maintaining the natural oil balance and leaving your hair frizz free to the maximum.

Does cold water loosen curls?

No! Cold water will never loosen your curls. Instead, cold water will help to add more definition to the curls as cold water seals the hair cuticles and locks in moisture.

So, if you have very unmanageable curls, you should instead wash your hair with warm water so that it opens up the locks in the curls. This is because warm water does exactly the opposite of cold water, that is it opens up the hair cuticles.

When should you use warm water for curly hair?

Let me take you to my shower routine (for straight hair). So, you will know what I do is exactly the opposite of what should be done for curly hair.

I start with washing my hair with shampoo and warm water. This helps to open up the pores in my scalp and take out all oil and dirt from the scalp for a complete clean up.

Then I apply the conditioner, wait for a few minutes and then rinse my hair thoroughly with cold water. This helps to lock in all the moisture and nutrition from the conditioner I have applied because as I have mentioned, cold water helps to seal the cuticles in the hair and the pores in the scalp.

So, if you have curly hair, you try to lock as much moisture in the hair as curls are prone to frizz. But you will also not want to build up oil and dirt in your scalp in the process, right?

So, at least once a month use warm water to clear your scalp off all oil and dirt wherein you can give back moisture to the hair in the form of conditioners later.
