Should You Wash Your Face Before or After a Shower?

Our face accumulates a lot of dirt and germs the entire day. So, it’s extremely important to cleanse your face thoroughly to get rid of all the impurities.

But one mistake that we all have been making since ages is cleansing our face while taking a shower. While it seems to be most convenient and time saving that while you cleanse your entire body, why not the face at the same time? But that’s the wrong way my beauties.

Washing your face while you shower? It’s a big NO! Let me tell you the negative side of that. While you wash your face in the shower, your shampoo, conditioner and other products may run through your face and clog your pores and even strip your face of all oils.

Should You Wash Your Face Before or After a Shower

Also, this can cause breakouts and while you shower, chances are you use warm water which is not good for the skin of the face which is very delicate.

So……

What is the ideal time to wash your face?

Salon experts and dermatologists say that the ideal time to wash your face are:

  • When you wake up in the morning and
  • Right before going to the bed

But will that serve our purpose always?

Most of us have a busy schedule at the office or for one or the other reason we need to step out of the house for shopping, groceries, medical appointments and so on.

So, will you not wash your face once you come back home? Will you let all the impurities settle on your face and keep waiting for your night time skin care routine to wash your face before it’s bed time?

No, that’s not how it works.

You need to cleanse your face thoroughly the moment you reach home. This will help keep your face clear of all the dirt and you will not clog your pores and get a skin free of oils and pimples.

Wash face when you wake up in the morning

But, does that mean you will not wash your face after taking a shower?

No, even if you wash/cleanse your face after you wake up in the morning or before taking a shower, it is advisable to wash your face even after you shower as well.

That’s because when you shower, hair care products drip down the face while your shampoo and that settles in the skin of the face and clog the pores.

If you are using a clarifying shampoo then all your face’s moisture is gonna be stripped off. So, after you shower, make sure to cleanse your face with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser.

The right way to wash your face

We all know that we should wash our face with a cleanser. But do you the right way to wash your face and the right order to use cleansers?

If you are wondering what I am talking about, let me explain. Using the wrong products and some wrong techniques can ruin your skin. Like using too hot or too cold water are both not good for the delicate face skin. Using harsh chemical cleansers can burn your skin and using the wrong cleanser will not serve the purpose.

So, what the correct way to wash your face?

  1. Begin with splashing your face with Lukewarm water.
  2. Once the face is moist, apply a gentle oil based cleanser to remove any makeup or settled dirt from the face.
  3. Next, use a water-based or a foaming cleanser to remove all dirt and oil.
  4. If you have specific skin concerns like dark patches, hyperpigmentation, acne, blemishes, choose the right face cleanser for the concerned problem and wash your face with that particular product.
  5. Splash a good amount of normal temperature water on your face.
  6. Pat your face with a microfiber cloth and do not rub your face with it.
The Dos of washing your face:
  1. Wash your face with normal temperature water that is neither too hot nor too cold.
  2. Use your fingers in gentle circular motions to apply the face wash and cleanse your face of all dirt. Do not be harsh.
  3. Always use a gentle skin cleanser that is very mild for the skin.
  4. A minimum of two step cleansing is essential (an oil based cleanser and a water based cleanser).
  5. Just pat your face dry with a soft muslin cloth after washing your face because after washing the skin is already very delicate.
The Don’ts of washing your face:
  1. Do not use too hot water because that will strip the face of all moisture.
  2. Do not use too cold water because that will just make your skin red and can cause freezing and thus hardening of the skin, leading to dead skin cells.
  3. Do not use peeling face cleansers or face cleansers with AHAs and BHAs on a regular basis. That can cause more harm than good to your face.
  4. Do not ice your face right before and after the shower.
  5. Do not wash your face when you are showering.
