Imagine if there were sunscreens where you don’t need to reapply again and again!
But that’s not possible right?
Unfortunately, when you are out and swear a lot, you definitely need to reapply your sunscreen after every 2 hours.
But the question here is, is there a need to wash your face before you reapply sunscreen?
Let’s be very practical, it’s not possible to wash your face when you are outside every time you reapply your sunscreen. So, what’s the solution?
There is actually no need to wash your face before you reapply your sunscreen unless it gets dirty and sweaty. And if you are out, you can use a wet wipe to clean your face before reapplying your sunscreen.

Should I cleanse my face before reapplying sunscreen?
Whether you should cleanse your face before reapplying sunscreen depends on the following factors:
1. If your face starts feeling sticky
When you are out in the sun and you have been wearing sunscreen for a long time, your sunscreen might start to feel a bit sticky which means your face needs a quick wash.
If you apply sunscreen at this point, you will feel more uncomfortable and your skin might start to itch as well.
2. If your face has caught up all dirt
Sunscreens are sticky after all! After a few hours of application and staying out, the sunscreen will definitely attract dirt and your face will start to feel dusty when touched.
That’s when you must wash your face or at least use a makeup remover wipe for cleaning your face before reapplying sunscreen.
3. If your face is sweating profusely
Putting sunscreen over sweat can cause skin problems as the sweat will get trapped in the sunscreen and settle on your skin. So, in this case too it’s necessary to wash your face.
4. If your makeup has started to melt
Applying sunscreen over melted makeup will not only make it look awful, but also make your skin feel uncomfortable and so washing your face or removing the makeup with a wipe is a must before reapplying sunscreen.
5. If you are wearing an oily sunscreen
As I have already said, all problems begin with these oily sunscreens that look good initially but make the skin sweaty and dirt after sometime.
So, if you are wearing one such sunscreen, you definitely need to wash your face with a cleanser before reapplication of the sunscreen.
While the above were the factors or situations where you need to wash your face before reapplying your sunscreen, the following are the ones when you don’t have to:
1. When you wear a matte finish sunscreen
Matte finish sunscreens are a saviour and a great invention. They don’t feel sticky, don’t accumulate dirt and keep you fresh all day. You don’t even have to keep on reapplying them.
2. When you are sitting inside an AC room
When you are sitting inside an AC room, the cool temperature will not make you sweat or make you feel sticky. So, there is no need to wash your face before reapplying the sunscreen.
3. When your face doesn’t feel sticky
When you feel there is no need to wash your face before reapplying sunscreen, just don’t because there’s no rule where it says washing your face is a must before applying sunscreen.
How to reapply sunscreen?
Let’s now talk about the correct way of reapplying sunscreen based on some situations:
1. When you are wearing makeup
- Cleanse your makeup with a makeup removing wipe
- Apply a base moisturiser
- Now apply your sunscreen
2. When you are sweating and it feels sticky
- Wash your face with a foaming cleanser
- Spray a refreshing face mist
- Apply a matte moisturiser
- Apply a matte sunscreen
3. When you are not wearing makeup and feel fresh
- Just grab your sunscreen and apply it on your face
See you soon!
The basic idea is to keep your face feeling fresh and clean. If your skin feels okay before the reapplication of the sunscreen, don’t wash your face , but if it feels dirty and sticky, at least use a makeup removing wipe and clean your face before the reapplication of the sunscreen.
